OSOYOOS

Story and Photos by

LEE A. WOOD

DRIVING EAST, TOWARDS OSOYOOS, ON HIGHWAY 3.

Do you recall the ads on TV where the little VW had boxes piled on top and had to stop for the low overpass.

There was no overpass, and the vehicle wasn't a VW, but this car reminded me of that ad.

One would assume that `Osoyoos' is an Indian name. And one would be right. Osoyoos, pronounced O-sue-use, comes from a tribe called `Okanagan'. The Okanagan Indian word means `the place where two lakes come together'.

Osoyoos is the name of the town and also the name of the lake. The lake is divided into two by an isthmus, or causeway.

Osoyoos, like many communities in Western Canada, and the North Western United States of America, owes its beginning to fur trading.

Now, the area's main industry is tourism, or agriculture, depending on whom you talk to.

DOWN THE HILL, TO OSOYOOS

THOUGH OFTEN REFERRED TO AS DESERT, OSOYOOS IS ACTUALLY A FEW MILES SOUTH OF THE WORLD'S SMALLEST DESERT.
THE ROAD DOWN, INTO TOWN, IS LONG AND WINDY, BUT NOT AS STEEP AND WINDY AS THAT ON THE EAST SIDE OF TOWN.
