`13/1/17 - I imagine, that since I live close by, that over the past few years I have probably; driven, rode, &/or walked past this heritage site a few hundred times.

I am sure that the first time I walked by the cairn that I took the time to read it and then just let it slip my mind.

It wasn"t until a couple of days ago that I was walking to the studio (the TV series Arrow, formerly the home of Smallville) on a fresh winter day that I took the time for a closer look and thought that this would be a good addition to this page.

Consequently I went back yesterday with my camera, though it wasn"t quite as nice a day and a lot of the snow had disappeared.

On the previous day, after checking out the photo ops for this place I walked by the old school (Kingsway East) that is the neighbouring property and realized that the back of the school was wide open and I recalled that when I had photographed the school I hadn"t taken pictures of the rear of the building.

Which made me remember that just a bit further on, at the end of a parallel side street, was another heritage property (The Gables) that I hadn"t tried to get a rear picture of.

So, walking back from the studio, I walked down the alley behind the house and confirmed that I couldn"t see the back of the house, but I did find some neighbouring properties that I could get through, without trespassing, and get some rear pictures.

    I posted them yesterday.

Writing this just now makes me wonder if the studio isn"t, or should be, a heritage site.

It is an old bakery that is slated to be torn down because the city, in its infinite wisdom, has decided that it can no longer be a film studio and once the current lease, with Warner Brs., runs out it will be rezoned residential.

I mean, I don"t blame the neighbours complaining about the noise and the traffic at all hours of the night, but on the other hand the film industry can not stand the loss of another studio.

The dentist says, `Plaque should be on a cairn, not on your teeth'.

The plaque on the cairn says...

In 1891 the Westminster and Vancouver Tramway Company, which was building a tramline along the route now used for the BC Parkway and SkyTrain, built the first power house on this site.

Utilizing water from Power House Creek, coal and cordwood fired the electric plant housed in the large corrugated iron clad building which doubled as a car barn.

The plant"s steam engines turned Edison electric generators that powered the entire tramline and streetcar system in New Westminster.

Adjacent to the power house, a small company town of cottages and a large boarding house was built for those working on the tramline.

This was the site for political gatherings of local residents and property owners.

After successfully petitioning the Provincial Government, a municipal charter was granted on September 22, 1892, and Burnaby citizens elected the first Mayor and Council at a meeting held in the Power House.
