In SEARCH of a REAL LASAGNA

by Garfield

Author's note:
All material on this website is covered by copyrite.

A famous, or is that infamous, cartoon character once stated that he had never met a Lasagna that he didn't like. I on the other hand have met many. I am continually searching for a GOOD Lasagna. Of course I am spoiled, having worked in a logging camp where the kitchen staff was from Greece. Once a week they served Lasagna that was, `to die for'. A large deep pan filled with layer after layer of; noodles, cheese, sauce, and small hand rolled meat balls that must have taken them hours to prepare.

Though I don't expect to ever find anything as good, I keep hoping I will find a tasty Lasagna at a reasonable price.

  • PLANET HOLLYWOOD

    `1/6/3

Supper last night was at the `Planet Hollywood'. Robson St. just off Burrard St, in the old Vancouver Public Library building. The ambience was, shall we say, theatrical; dummies, costumes, props, and other memorabilia from movies, clinging to the walls and hanging from the ceilings. The service was; quick, friendly, and efficient. The Lasagna was, in name only. The menu called it `L. A. Lasagna' and priced it reasonably at just under $11.

Two large cylindrical pieces of pasta, stuffed with meat and ricotta cheese, were sliced at an angle through the center. The four pieces were stood on their ends in the middle of a deep plate and garnished with meat sauce.

Very appealing, very tasty, but not Lasagna.

My mistake, I ordered the `baked' Lasagna so I can't give a rating on this restaurant's `Lasagna', they don't have one on the menu.

(Baked Lasagna is a pasta concoction that is placed in a dish, usually metal, then heated in an oven until the covering layer of cheese turns a golden brown. A real Lasagna consists of several layers of cheese alternating with layers of wide noodle pasta, sauce, and meat.)

However; the ambience was a very nice Mediterranean, the service was efficient and friendly, and the prices were reasonable.

  • CAPRICORN ROTISSERIE & GRILL 656 Broadway W.

`1/8/12 Again my mistake. The sandwich board on the sidewalk said `Special' Steak and Lasagna. I asked the waiter if it was pre made or... and he said it was made by the cook. He also assured me that it contained neither spinach or cottage cheese.

Why is it that every restaurant in Vancouver thinks it is in Paris, France and has to obstruct pedestrian traffic by fencing off part of the sidewalk. We settled into plastic chairs on the sidewalk to enjoy the last hour of sun on a rare, sunshiny day.

The prices on the menu were good and the service was excellent. Though we suffered through exhaust fumes on the outside the customers inside enjoyed a decor that is unique in design. I plan to go back one day and sit inside just to savour the ambience. But not the Lasagna.

Had I been paying attention I would have noticed that the only Lasagna on the menu was baked Lasagna. Not what I am searching for.

Desperate for a lasagna I ordered the chicken, ribs, lasagna dish for $11.95

Un garnished, plain, in taste as well as appearance. The ribs & chicken that is. The lasagna was like any other `bakedÉ lasagna, boring, watery, and tasteless. Doesn't anyone in this city know how to make `REAL' lasagna, besides Mrs. VanelliÉs?

Pleasant interior with a large patio, reasonable food, reasonable prices.

I give the staff `E' for effort. The management failed to prognosticate the size of the clientele they would receive on Father's Day and the kitchen was unable to keep up with the demand.

All around me I could hear the waitress apologizing as customers complained: their order hadn't arrived yet, their food was cold, they had received the wrong dish.

Myself, I usually walk out if I have to wait that long for food to arrive, 80 minutes, but it was late, I was tired and didn't feel like driving around looking for another restaurant.

As their lasagna was like any other restaurant I have found so far, `bakedÉ and I couldn'tÉt decide on chicken or beef, not being fond of lamb, I chose the beef / chicken combo, with rice, roast potato, and Caesar, rather than Greek, salad.

This is a restaurant I have eaten in many times, several years ago. The present owners have been operating for two years and have remodeled.

Formerly dark, and intimate, it is now bight, and cheery, with new windows and light-coloured decor, reminiscent of a taverna in Greece.

The menu said `Lasagna AlfornoÉ and the waitressÉ description of; two layers of cheese, two layers of sauce, three layers of noodles, and a toping of Mozzarella, sounded good until she said that there was also two layers of spinach.

Why anyone would want to ruin a perfectly good lasagna with spinach is beyond me.

However, upon further enquiry I learned it wasnÉt a `goodÉ lasagna. Alforno, means `bakedÉ. Which explains the layer of mozzarella on top while the inside layers were ricotta.

I ordered the Fettuccine Vitello which was very tasty.

The interior of the restaurant is dim and intimate, with pleasant decor, reminiscent of a restaurant in Italy.

    DODIE'S(Pic. of food on table.)

    `3/7/20

Quote, by Dodie, It is very important to cook each of the ingredients separately, such as: the tomato sauce; the garlic, oven-roasted; the saut╣ed stuff; the meat; and lasagna noodles.

This allows each flavour to mature fully so that they don't lose their identities when merged.

The dish becomes a symphony of taste rather than a drone of insipidity.

(I think I'll quote that in my cookbook!)

    Bear's Lasagna:

    Recipe by Dodie.

In a deep dish cooking pan, spread:

    A layer of noodles.

A layer of sauce containing: ground beef, peppers/mushrooms/garlic and tomato sauce.

    A sprinkling of parmesan.

    A layer of mozzarella.

Continue layering until it spills over the edges, ending with either a meat sauce or a mozzarella top.

Place in oven till hot (Cheeses are melted).

A friend, Dodie, got tired of my constant complaining about `Baked Lasagna' so, she made me a `Real Lasagna' for my birthday.

    LASAGNA AL FORNO - $18.00

This location, on the South West Corner of Rupert and 1st Ave. for many years was a Chinese Smorgasbord. I have eaten there several times over the years. Just when (though it has been so for several years), it became an Italian restaurant, I don't know. I do believe it sat empty for several years in between.

It offers limited parking and is hard to get into and out of because of the high volume of traffic on 1st Ave.

However once inside it is worth the trip.

Ambience: Pleasantly Italian and pleasant overall.

    Service: Friendly, Efficient.

Prices: High to my standards but normal for this day and age.

Wine: a good selection but to my displeasure, no B.C. or Canadian wine, by the glass (only by the bottle). Obviously a good selection of Italian.

Lasagna: Hand made, (Took a while for its preparation) well proportioned, definitely Lasagna, but slightly overcooked.
