On the weekend of Oct. 23 `99 I attended the Surrey Writer's Conference. While there, I talked to Susan M. Boyce the speaker at the workshop for travel writing. I then attended her workshop and became inspired to do travel articles.

`New Westminster Quay' is the first of my endeavours and has been submitted to several magazines and newspapers. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it and taking the pictures.

Note: Two years after writing, this article appeared in the Oct `01 issues of `Airlines', the in-flight magazine for Westjet Airlines.

My first published article was Burn Camp 2000. A short version with a picture of the hot rods went in the Sept. `00 issue of Western Driver, a Vancouver, B. C. based automotive paper. A longer version with a picture of three bikers from the state of Washington was in the Oct. `00 issue of Thunderpress, an L. A. based motorcycle paper.

    ABORTION
    * Why the laws were made. *

    Story
    by
    LEE A. WOOD

Time and again the media inundate us with stories of activists, for and against, abortion. Stories of people parading in the streets with signs, throwing rocks, filing petitions. But do any of them, media or activists, ever take the time to really understand the purpose and intent of anti abortion laws.

Abortion laws are nothing new. They come up in parliament every now and then for amendment but they have been there since the beginning of the Dominion.

Abortion or at least the desire for abortion has probably been around as long as birth itself . Females, or their mates, have wanted to destroy fetuses, or is that foeti, for many different reasons. Some faiths require that the first born be male, perhaps the male parent is from the wrong side of the tracks, or maybe the female is just too young to give birth. Whatever the reason, the idea of abortion is more prevalent in society than the knowledge, or acceptance, of contraception.

Please note that I use the term female to denote the gender of the person and don't use the words girl or woman because pregnancy and abortion are common to all ages from ten to seventy.

As the idea of abortion came into being long before the term doctor was ever coined and the methods used to cause an abortion even during the early days of doctoring more often than not caused the death of the pregnant female, as well as, if not instead of, the death of the fetus, laws were enacted to prevent abortions, not for the protection of the fetus but for the protection of the mother.

Changes in legislation to allow abortion clinics are not for the purpose of allowing doctors to kill foeti but to save the lives of mothers who would otherwise turn to forbidden avenues. Despite today's modern knowledge of medicine, females, and males too for that matter, are still woefully ignorant as to how a baby is conceived and how conception can be prevented.

Though many tout that sex, as seen in magazines and movies, leads to promiscuity the fact that possession of any such material by its citizens has not prevented China from becoming the world's most populous country.

As the population of the planet increases so does the demand for abortion and if the law does not allow doctors and clinics to perform such functions the reluctantly pregnant females will turn to other sources for relief from their burdens.

Chemicals, rusty coat hangers, in dark rooms, in sleazy hotels, or behind the dumpster in some damp alley. Such are the choices that females face if abortions are outlawed. Choices that only too often lead to the death of the mother, exactly what anti abortion laws were meant to prevent.

The answer is, of course, abortion under the care and control of trained physicians in sanitary conditions such as a hospital or a clinic. Death, you say, yes, in a way but better the death of an unborn fetus than the terrifying death of a young girl in some dark alley.

TOURISM - The Death Knell for that; quiet, inexpensive, get-away

Has your favourite vacation spot become a tourist Mecca?

We the transients, who fell in love with Zihu. (Zihuatanejo, Mexico) the way it was, have created Zihu. the way it is. Now that it is not what we loved we are free to move on, leaving behind the native population to `enjoy’ what we have ruined.

Several years ago, my friend, and I, on our first trip to Mexico, visited Zihuatanejo.

We made friends with; Mexican, and expat, locals. We fell in love with; the town, the country, its climate, its people, and their way of life.

Making up for my many years of not traveling I have, since then, visited many other areas of, Mexico, and this planet. But I return every other year to visit my friends in Zihu. and each time I notice the growth. It is a culmination of; the immigration of people, such as myself, who fell in love with the life and, the uncontrolled birthrate of a modern world that has prolonged the life span of the human animal.

Zihu. is by no means alone in this regard. As I revisit other places in my travels; Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Shanghai, Sanya, I see the same growth, from idyllic, affordable, escapes to; overpopulated, bustling, expensive, hives of humanity.

Though tourists can be blamed for a lot of it, one must also put the blame on the locals.

While the tourists have gone home and extolled the beauties of the jewell they have found, to their friends and family, the locals have been influenced by the travelers who have shown that with a little advertising, more tourists will come, with more tourist dollars.

It is a snowball effect, with; the natural increase in the local population, advertising by local businesses, improved highways by the government, increased flights by the airline companies, more modern accommodations by the hotel industry, and what was once a quite, laid back, oasis is now a bustling commercial entity.

And let’s not overlook the cost. As tourists extolled the virtues of their `paradise found’ thereby increasing the popularity, they also caused prices to increase. That once `affordable’ destination has become `unaffordable’ to the budget traveler.

Could it have been prevented? Doubtful. Impossible to swear everyone to silence. Like trying to stop the Cariboo Gold Rush. It only takes one person to spill the beans.

There used to be a similar jewel in Canada’s Shuswap Lake District. Now, it takes over thirty minutes to get a break in the traffic so that you can cross the main street from one shopping area to the other, in downtown Sorrento.

Is there a cure? No, unfortunately, unless one can turn back the hands of time, these towns will never be `quite little villages’ again.

ONCE A DIRT TRAIL, THROUGH A SLEEPY FISHING VILLAGE, MEXICO’S HWY. 200, IS NOW A MAJOR THOROUGHFARE THROUGH THE BUSTLING TOURIST MECCA OF ACAPULCO

    OVER POPULATION - 2011

The Aztec calendar says our world will end, as we know it, near the end of 2011. Uncontrolled population expansion may prove them to be correct.

We the transients, who fell in love with Zihu. (Zihuatanejo, Mexico) the way it was, have created Zihu. the way it is. Now that it is not what we loved we are free to move on, leaving behind the native population to `enjoy’ what we have ruined.

Several years ago, my buddy and I, on our first trip to Mexico, visited Zihuatanejo. We made friends with; Mexican, and expat, locals. We fell in love with; the town, the country, its climate, its people, and their way of life.

Making up for my many years of not traveling I have, since then, visited many other areas of Mexico, and this planet.

As I revisit other places in my travels; Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Shanghai, Sanya, I see the same growth, from idyllic, affordable, escapes to overpopulated, bustling, expensive, hives of humanity.

Though tourists can be blamed for a lot of it, one must realize that the church and the government are as much to blame. With their beliefs in; sex, for procreation only, and raising money by selling building permits even if they don’t have the basics such as water and sewer to support the new buildings, every municipality on the planet is outgrowing their food and water supply.

China had the right idea, one child per family, but unfortunately the rest of the world did not follow her example and now we all face villages becoming towns and towns becoming cities. All with insufficient water supply.

And because many of us grew up in a century of plenty we are not teaching our children how to conserve. And as we all believe in democracy, heaven help the government that tries to curtail our waste of the precious liquid or asks us to limit our right to bear children.

Over the past several centuries the population of humans has been controlled by death; disease, famine, war. If we study other forms of fauna we see populations in smaller areas, over a few years, increase to the rate that the food supply is insufficient and then nature seems to introduce a disease, or a predator, that prevails until the population has been reduced to a sustainable level.

I feel that that is what is happening now, with the human population. I guestimate that within this century we will have overpopulated our supply of food, and water.

Those of us who travel see what is happening in other towns, and countries but the people in power don’t see for themselves and won’t heed the warnings of those who do see.

I predict that by the end of this century the planet Earth will experience; drought, famine, and war, the likes we have never seen.

We talk of; pollution, global warming, and many other ills that have befallen our planet. However, if we look closely at each one of these potential calamites we can see that they all stem from the same source - over population.

The end of life may come about from anyone, or a combination, of all these problems. Is there a way to prevent the forth coming calamity? Is it too late?

Personally I believe it is too late.

Had we all followed China’s example and restricted our birth rate to one offspring to every female for the next fifty years, our population would have dwindled to a point where we could increase our birth rate to two children per couple and then have maintained a sustainable level forever.

However, the time it will take to get everyone on board with this idea so that the governments won’t meet with violent opposition when they try to implement the required laws is more time than we have left on this planet.

Perhaps the Aztecs were not that far out when they designed a calendar that ends in 2011.

There are as many specialties in the medical field as there are in the world of sports.

    MY SON THE DOCTOR

    * A spoof. *
    Photo and Story
    by
    Dr. LEE A. WOOD

I came home today, after six hours of open heart surgery at the Prince George Regional Hospital. My son had moved out. Not completely, his football is still here, his calculator is gone. He left behind all his hockey gear, but took his notebook computer.

His soccer shoes are still in the closet but his Diconix portable printer is gone. Before he packed it he used it to print me a note; `Dear Dad. Am catching the Big Dog. Got a Graham Bell from UBC (University of British Columbia).

They had a last minute cancellation. The seat is mine if I take it right away. Will phone you tonight. Your son the Doctor. PS. Could you put some cash in the ATM, my plastic is getting low.'

    A Doctor!

My son is going to medical school?

    Where did I go wrong?

I gave him everything a boy could want. I put him through Wolf Cubs and Boy Scouts. I even took training as a hockey coach and taught him how to skate. Didn't I buy him the finest stick, the best helmet, the most expensive face mask on the market?

I encouraged him in every sport going. I drove him to games at night and to tournaments at five o'clock on Sunday mornings.

My son the all-star; My son the fullback, My son the center. My son the Doctor? God! Why me? Why Me?

I worked and slaved to make enough money so that he could have a good education. Didn't I send him to Hockey school in Kelowna just last summer? A Wayne Gretsky he ain't. But even a left defenseman makes a Mil. a year. Plus expenses. What's a doctor make? A Mil a year? Maybe if he's a brain surgeon. And out of that he has to pay all his expenses; wages for staff, rent for office, golf fees. Now there's where you can make good money.

I bought him the finest set of clubs money could buy. But does he want to be another Jack Nicklaus?

How big an audience do you have in an operating room, and most of them are male.

Name the top ten supporting operating room staff for 1985? Who was the most valuable anesthetist in '83? Do they have a hall of fame for Gynecologists?

You hear about operating teams. Do you know any of the names of any of the members of the team? If you had a score card could you tell who they were? Do any of them ever win a Cadillac for being the most valuable player on the team? Name the nurse who has done the most number of closing without leaving a sponge inside.

I used to have a really nice crushed oyster shell driveway. Five years ago I dug it up and poured concrete in its place. I bought a regulation Plexiglas backboard, mounted it regulation height and inflated the ball to regulation pressure. Do you know how much fans pay for an autograph of an NBA star? Have you ever heard of anyone paying for an autographed scalpel?

Can't you just see the youngsters in the alley: "I'll trade you two initialed suture needles for your Dr. Fieldstone surgical clamp." "Only if your throw in a face mask of his nurse from the Aug. '72 tracheotomy."

Do you know how much you can get for an autographed ball caught in Candlestick Park? Can't you just picture the fans gathered around an operating table, diving underneath, and fighting to see who gets the dropped stethoscope?

I know medicine is an honoured profession and most doctors drive nice cars and have nice homes but they have to go to college for five years, intern for two years, finance, furnish, and equip their new office, pay interest for ten years, pay mortgage on their homes for twenty years.

I didn't want my son to have to suffer through such agonies. He is young, strong, and physically fit.

Why couldn't he be more interested in sports? He could have fame and fortune.

Why don't children listen to their parents? The Human Being is supposed to be more advanced than other animals because they can communicate, remember, and pass on knowledge to their young. Unfortunately, unlike other animals, the offspring of humans don't listen to the teachings of their parents.
